Heartworm disease is a serious disease that results in severe lung disease, heart failure, other organ damage, and death in pets.
Heartworm disease is not contagious, meaning that a dog cannot catch the disease from being near an infected dog. Heartworm disease is only spread through the bite of a mosquito.
The Animal League does not turn its back to rescuing heartworm positive dogs, in spite of the high costs to treat this painful and deadly disease. At any given time The Animal League has in its care about 20 heartworm positive dogs, in which the treatment costs range from $500 – $800 for each pet.
