Every Spring, The Animal League experiences a challenging situation known as “Puppy and Kitten Season”, where the number of puppies and kittens far exceed the number of homes available. Each season we work tirelessly to care for litters that would otherwise be euthanized. You might not guess how much goes on “behind the scenes” – there’s so much more than meets the eye. Puppies are a lot of work for rescues. They require much more intensive care and medications than adult dogs. We are thankful for all of our foster moms and dads who give of their time and love to these babies and their mommas.
Ha-pea (pictured above and below) came to us from another shelter with her 9 puppies. Our volunteers and staff made sure they were comfortable, cared for, and on the right track. Ha-pea was so patient with us while we checked over her babies, getting their weight and giving them a checkup. This good girl was a sweetheart even when getting her own checkup, with tests, micro-chipping, and medications. Thank you to volunteers Frank and Ginny, and staffer Jen, for coming in to help with our intake process. We couldn’t do it without people like them!
Puppy and kitten season means we have a lot of little hungry mouths to feed, janitorial supplies go faster than usual, and medical expenses rise exponentially. Or perhaps you would like to foster a litter? We have had lots of requests lately, specifically for puppies needing help. If you are available to foster a litter we could really use you! Puppies need a space separated from other pets, and we typically set you up with a play pen and pee pads to keep things clean. We’ll provide all of the supplies you would need (food, medications, sheets, towels, etc.). All we need is some space in your home and a bit of love and care.
